Ventura County Plant Checklists

Home

Checklists of native and naturalized nonnative vascular plants are provided on this web page.   Checklists have been developed for a number of places and trails of Ventura County, California.   The checklists are based on the author's personal observations, with many of the observations supported by voucher specimens, which have been (or will be) deposited into the Herbarium at UCSB, or have been previously collected (vouchered) by other botanists.   The checklists are arranged alphabetically by placename.   Each checklist is a PDF formatted file, which requires Acrobat Reader (which can be downloaded free if you don't have it, just Google it).

Bryophytes are nonvascular plants, which contribute to the biodiveristy of Ventura County.   Often ignored by botanists, below is the first checklist of bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts) documented as occurring in Ventura County.

Lichens are unique and interesting nonvascular plants (some biologists don't consider them plants at all), which contribute to the biodiveristy of Ventura County.   Also often ignored by botanists, below is the first checklist of lichens documented as occurring in Ventura County as a whole.   There are numerous publications of lichen occurrences in selected areas of the county, such as in the Santa Monica Mountains.   This annotated checklist includes brief descriptions and photographs, when available, to help with identification.   A large number of the lichens are locally rare, with 5 or fewer extant populations known for Ventura County.
